Bryn Hills is a leading music educator based at Ballarat High. He has strong opinions on music competitions.
Why competition has no meaningful place in music education OR IF YOU NEED TO COMPETE PLAY SPORT!
Bryn Hills
Recently I had the great
pleasure of attending a collective school band performance at Ballarat
High. Six bands took part
including Matthew Flinders’ – Sweethearts, Trinity College’s Sophisticated
Swing, Oberon High Schools’ rock band, Torquay primary schools’ rock band, Mt
Clear secondary colleges’ original big band and Ballarat Highs’ Whizbang, a 15
piece original band with 3 albums to their credit.
The standards of performance and level of
stagecraft were exceptional. The
range of music was incredibly diverse and the show of support for each other
very warming. Each school was
eager to listen to each other and many ideas, perspectives and phone numbers
were exchanged on the day.
